If I Were A Shape…

After the poet Brian Moses left a comment on Charlie’s brilliant London Eye writing on the blog, we decided to have a go at a poetry challenge that Brian had set for children from all over the country…

We read the poem “If I Were A Shape” over at the Lend Me Your Literacy website, then we used the school netbooks to write our own versions inspired by the original, which were later posted to the website.

5JT’s entries begin here - have a look, and let us know what you think!

Don’t Stop Believin’…

This term we have been looking at what kind of things make us better learners, and we have talked a lot in class about perseverance – the ability to keep on going even when you are finding something difficult…

We started by looking at the life stories of some very famous people who had to overcome huge obstacles to achieve their success. Today, 5JT used the school’s new netbook computers (which we are loving!) to design posters about these people and their stories to help remind us not to give up when we are facing obstacles ourselves.

The posters are looking great and are going to go on our Learning Skills wall in the classroom; here are a few examples – well done to Fern, Isaac and Brooke!

Writing Showcase: Felix, Ethan and Ryan

5JT have been private detectives this week, considering the evidence in the case of Salim’s disappearance in The London Eye Mystery… We wrote balanced arguments to weigh up the reasons why one of the characters may or may not have been lying about what happened, and then gave our own verdicts.

The whole class did brilliantly, but there are a few examples that I wanted to share – Felix, Ethan and Ryan all did really well at using the features of a balanced argument to consider the evidence available. Well done!

Here’s Felix’s argument:

Firstly the man could be lying because he said he gets vertigo but he is here where there are lots of tall hills and ramps. I feel that he told Kat about the scooters to distract us.Also he didn’t talk about  Salim like we asked. As well as this, he is claustrophobic why would he by a ticket for the london eye?

But as well as that he could have been given the ticket and could have thought he could do it. plus, he could have told Kat of the scooters because he’s nice and he could have gone because its his job.  Also theres a small possibility he’s a secret agent and that could be his cover story.

All in all i think the security guard is not guilty because well you cant arrest a man for doing his job and being nice even if he is a bit scared of heights.

Here’s Ethan:

This guy is lying…

He’s a security man, so why would they get him if he’s scared of heights? Secondly , why would he wanted to distracted Kat and ted ? maybe he wanted to change the subject  so that they could not find out what happened to Salim. In my opinion , the man maybe got the ticket so Salim could get lost , he must of lied about being claustrophobic . Finley, why would he be so nice.

But he could be telling the truth …

Maybe when he got his story wrong it could just be that he gets his words wrong. As well as that when he wore that t-shirt, its not good but it’s not a crime , is it ? Or he might of distracted Kat and ted so he could get on with his work instead of sitting there all day. And when he let Kat, Ted and Salim have the ticket, he was just doing something nice.

Well I think that he’s lying and that he should be arrested –ARRESTED  !!!

But I must find more evedents.

And here’s Ryan:

I think he is lying because he quickly changed the subject therefore he did not want Kat and Ted to find out what happened. Secondly, he wearing his work clothes even though he was just wearing his work t-shirt. . I am sure he is lying  as he was eager to get rid of Kat and Ted .

On the other hand he is  not lying, it is pretty easy to forget stuff. Also wearing your uniform is not a crime then he could be a good guy. Any way a security man would not lie or would he? Why should we believe kids they always tell lies…

To sum it up I want to say he is lying a security guard scared of heights! Also him changing the subject every 5 minutes. In my opinon also saying kids lie is even worst. I think he is evil…

Good work guys!

What do you think? Let us know what you like about these pieces of writing, and what you think could be improved…

Writing Showcase: Charlie

Yesterday, Charlie used Pages on the iPad to write a great description of the view from the London Eye, based on pictures we had looked at in class. I love the use of simile and metaphor in this:

I could see big Ben striking 12 o’clock as pigeons flocked  around the famous Cleo’s  needle in Trafalgar square. The whole city looked like a dolls house. I scanned the city again the tower bridge looked magnificent as it opened and closed for boats to go through. As time past I spotted wembley arch  glimmering like children’s eyes on christmas day. The wind was a post man tapping on the glass of the pod. Cars moved like people and people moved like mice and mice moved like ants. The olympic arena processed at what seemed a snail slow pace.

Great writing Charlie! We are very excited about the fact that, next term, Year 5 are travelling all the way from Bristol to London to go on the Eye ourselves! Charlie, we will have to see if the view is as you imagined…
